JavaScript Engineer

We’re searching for someone with at least two years experience building modern web apps - with a focus on JavaScript (we use React). That being said, we’re a highly collaborative team and you’ll be working with a team of 5-6 engineers on the entire stack: our Django/Python application which operates at impressive scale on AWS; our very-modern React/Redux front-end; and our SQL-driven analytics projects.

We’re looking for a team member that communicates and learns well, always strives to leave anything they touch in a better state than they found it, and a person who makes collaborative decisions in advance of jumping into their text editor. Our team is ambitious, lean, and very autonomous.

The immediate focus will be on:

  • Our next generation textbook replacement products
  • Data-heavy dashboards that enable teachers to teach more effectively
  • Internal tools that enable our teams to do smarter work

What will you be doing?

  • Collaborating on API design, and front-end architecture and product
  • Collaborating with our designer and front-end engineers on:
    • Prototyping
    • CSS, Sass, and CSS Modules
    • QA and testing
    • Solving design problems, and finalising extremely polished interactions and user flows
  • Playing an active role in product strategy, and data analysis
  • Helping to experiment, learn, and improve upon our technical processes and workflows
  • You’ll be involved in our build, testing, and deployment processes
  • Collaborating with our data engineer in determining how the front-end interfaces with our analytics stack

What are we looking for?

  • B.S. or higher in Computer Science (or equivalent work experience)
  • You don’t need to be a React expert, but JavaScript is your language
  • You’ve got Python experience, or are interested in learning more
  • You don’t love meetings, but love collaboration, and pair programming
  • You reflect on your work, can set your own goals, and communicate your progress
  • You have strong English skills, both written and spoken
  • You are comfortable working with large amounts of information, both qualitative and quantitative, from different types of sources
  • A passion for, and proven evidence in making beautiful, smooth, delightful web experiences
  • Broad knowledge of the JavaScript ecosystem
  • Disciplined approach to writing tests and quality assurance
  • You’re the sort of person who leaves things better than when you found them, and you’re not afraid to whip existing code into better shape.

The offer

  • A competitive salary that reflects your seniority and experience
  • Equity in a profitable and scaling business
  • Your career grows with the company
  • Work closely with your team leader (who’s technical), and founders - who have worked at Google, Goldman Sachs, and built and sold companies in Silicon Valley
  • Our Melbourne team of roughly 45 has just moved into a newly fitted-out Fitzroy office – right between Smith and Brunswick St.
  • Regular team events, dinners, and drinks
  • Work from home (or wherever you want) on Fridays. And we’re flexible about remote work more generally.
  • No complex hierarchy or politics. Casual dress and flexible working hours.
  • Work on a product that already has a positive impact on tens of thousands of students every month - and growing

If this sounds like you, please send an email, resume, and Github profile to nathan@edrolo.com and tell us a little about why this role sounds right for you.
