Inspired by our Do 10 campaign, Madison, a teacher at one Queensland school, got in touch as she was inspired by the idea and had her own take on it. She was offering her class a pizza party if they could together 'Do 1000' questions within 10 weeks (which worked out at about 10 questions per week).
So we checked in with Madison at the end of the 10 weeks to see if the temptation of pizza worked and if she saw any changes in her students.
What were some of the things you were seeing in your class and why did you want to set the class goal?
What I really loved seeing was how students worked together and encouraged each other. I didn’t have to remind them at all – some students naturally took on leadership roles, reminding and motivating their peers to keep up with their questions.
Did the incentive motivate students to study more?
Yes, especially some students who had previously not even opened Edrolo.
Did you see any changes in students' study/behaviours as a result/over the term?
Students started taking time each day to answer questions, even if it was just a few. They began to build a consistent habit, and I think they realised that effective exam preparation is about small, regular efforts rather than cramming the night before.
What's your advice to other teachers to motivate students and/or help them set study routines?
Set a class goal for answering questions and encourage students to motivate and cheer each other on. Although the students were externally motivated by pizza, they really found they had a much better memory for content with a more regular approach and plan to continue regular use of edrolo questions in the future.
How did the class go? Did they do the 1000 questions as you'd hoped?
They sure did, just! They did 1045 questions in the 10 weeks, which was incredible, and now I owe them some pizzas.. they're not letting me forget that!
