"I actually get it, Mum”: Homeschooling Year 7 and 10 Maths
It’s the declaration every educator wants to hear: “I get it”.
Shona, an experienced homeschooler of 20 years, has a strong focus on differentiating learning for her four children across Years 3 to 10, always looking for new approaches or resources that will help her children learn.
“When I look at resources the most important thing is that they support each child's unique learning style and can address their specific needs. Second to that, of course it’s ideal if they align with the national curriculum or New South Wales curriculum too!”
From piecemeal to peace of mind
Before getting Edrolo Maths for her children in Years 7 and 10, Shona was having to piece together multiple resources to create complete and effective learning for her children.
“With other paid online Maths programs, they’d watch a lesson video, attempt some questions, and then hit a wall. The explanations either weren’t clear or the questions didn’t link to what had been shown. So I’d end up having to sit with them to YouTube explanations and help put it all together. They weren’t getting the fundamentals, and I’d watch the videos with them and be confused too!”
As each child's needs were different, this process had to be repeated individually. For Shona this added to her workload, led to her children feeling frustrated and was negatively impacting learning.
“The worst part was when they'd seem to understand something with the help of extra videos on YouTube, but then weeks later you'd realise there were still gaps because the original lesson and the YouTube video didn't quite align perfectly.”
Building deep conceptual understanding in Maths
Even within a few weeks of using Edrolo Maths with her Year 7 and Year 10 children, the fragmented learning experience has been replaced with a more cohesive and effective learning experience.
Unlike other online programs that left her children hitting walls, Edrolo Maths video lessons are clear and connect directly to practice and application.
“The lessons are taught by real teachers, so they’re very well thought out and comprehensive. After each video the kids can do some practice, so they’re applying what they know… then they watch some more, and do some more practice. It’s layering up so they get the fundamentals. It’s all connected and makes sense.”
The comprehensive nature and careful structuring of Edrolo Maths lessons means that when Shona’s children complete a lesson, they actually understand and can apply what they’ve learnt—not just superficially, but with genuine conceptual depth.
The worked examples show multiple approaches to problems, helping students see the underlying mathematical reasoning rather than just memorising procedures - or worse, being left confused and with gaps.
Seeing results already
For Shona, there’s already massive improvements within a few weeks. Her children are telling her they get it, and she can see them putting their learning into practice after a lesson when she checks their answers and the data on Edrolo.
“With Edrolo it’s been a lot less stress. Also I think the kids feel it's more achievable and I feel they're actually getting not just more understanding, but a more solid understanding. And by achievable it's not that it’s easy, it's that it’s scaffolded so they can actually learn and achieve within a lesson. There aren’t those frustrating gaps that used to appear because everything has been learned properly the first time around."
Whilst it’s still too early to see a complete confidence shift for her two children, Shona is hopeful as they continue to achieve in Maths and learn with Edrolo, the next statement might just be, “I love Maths, Mum”.
