Historical significance can be a wooly topic for junior secondary students to grasp. With this free ready-to-go lesson plan, accompanying editable teacher slides and student activity (linked in the lesson plan), your students will be well on the way to mastering this important skill. The activity could be easily adapted for other year levels as a revision or refresher activity.

About this lesson: This Year 7 topic (aligned to the Victorian Curriculum Content Standard VCHHC104) introduces students to the concept of historical significance. Students review examples of historically significant events and people, and are introduced to a skills framework to assess whether an event or person is historically significant. To apply the skill of assessing cultural significance, students look at the invention of the iPhone and use the skills framework introduced in the lesson to assess its historical significance.
