Good to great in General Maths - VCE General Maths study tips with Tal Ellinson

Otto Sargent, Marketing Coordinator - Edrolo
,

Who else makes Maths so marvellous other than our one and only, Tal Ellinson! He’s is one of the most popular Edrolo presenters and it’s easy to see why. Tal makes Maths fun, easy and memorable. Data scientist, teacher, author and presenter, Tal is the VCE Maths maestro.

Tal will be presenting two VCE General Maths student study sessions on Friday 4 October in Melbourne and Sunday 20 October in Bendigo as part of Edrolo Study Fest '24.

What do you love about teaching General Maths ?

General Maths is so practical! Data and statistics are used in business decision-making and finance sets people up for life. Matrices and Networks are just pure fun! I love how every student can grow in the subject and find something they are strong at and love.

What is a concept students most often struggle with?

Networks, advanced financial solver problems and seasonal indices.

What are you going to cover in the study session?

A review of the key ideas from Units 3-4; guidance on the advanced skills; a deep dive into the hardest exam questions; and top tips, tricks and ideas for succeeding in the exams.

What’s a taster of a study tip that students might expect from the session?

Practice switching on and switching off. When it’s time to study, focus and study well. When it’s time to break, let it go and be kind to yourself.

What will students take away from the session?

A renewed love for General Maths; improved skills in the tough topics; greater understanding of the exam and a connection with fellow students.

What can students be doing now to set themselves up to be ready for exam prep next term?

Start exam questions now. No matter where your class is up to, you’ve covered enough material that you can start doing exam questions. If there are gaps in your knowledge, make some summary notes, but keep it brief. Get onto those exam questions as soon as possible.

Any tips you’d give students who might be struggling right now, to stay across their studies, remember content across classes etc?

The choice is not all or nothing. Pick one topic to focus on at a time. Make a few brief revision notes but always pair them with an example question to demonstrate the ideas. Don’t compare yourself to others - just make sure you do your best every day. You can surprise yourself if you work hard.

Also, use the examiners’ reports to help guide you on what questions to practice. Use the marking scheme to select the easier questions. Start there and work your way up.

What’s the one thing you always tell your students for success in General Maths?

Lots of practice exams. And don’t brush away your ‘silly’ mistakes. Summarise them and study them. They are portals to discovery.

Why should students come see you in person?

Get ready for a jam-packed maths session. You’ll learn new skills and tricks and leave with a greater confidence in your abilities. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Let’s share our love of maths!
